The 10-year Luck Pillars, known as Da Yun, begin at a calculated age rather than automatically at birth. The calculation has two parts: choose the direction of the pillar sequence, then convert the time interval to the relevant solar-term boundary into a starting age.
This calculator uses the traditional rule based on the Yin or Yang polarity of the birth year's Heavenly Stem and the direction convention selected in the form.

For a forward sequence, the calculator measures from the corrected birth moment to the next solar-month boundary—Jie (节). For a reverse sequence, it measures back to the previous Jie. The 12 Jie boundaries mark the beginning of the BaZi solar months; they are not ordinary calendar-month boundaries.

Suppose the measured interval to the relevant Jie is 19 days, 6 hours, and 24 minutes. Eighteen days convert to 6 years. The remaining 1 day converts to 4 months, the 6 hours add 1 month, and 24 minutes convert to 2 days. The resulting starting age is therefore 6 years, 5 months, and 2 days.

Da Yun timing has more than one convention. Some tools round to a whole age, use a different solar-term endpoint, omit longitude correction, or change the day at 11 p.m. instead of midnight.
